The Benefits of Massage Chairs

The first massage chairs were introduced in the 1930’s and revolutionized the world of massage therapy. With today’s advanced technology, massage chairs have dramatically improved since then.

Replicate the Therapeutic Techniques of Massage Therapy

Modern massage chairs are designed to mimic the expert hands of a trained massage therapist.

The sophisticated 3D rollers target key muscle groups and soft tissue, while moving in multiple directions for a realistic simulation of a professional massage. Many chair models also feature the ability to adjust the intensity of the rollers, giving you control.

What’s more, high quality massage chairs incorporate different modalities into one chair, including chiropractic, reflexology, and physiotherapy.  Massage rollers can also simulate the fingertip massage of shiatsu and provide the deep tissue techniques of a Swiss massage.

With your own personal massage chair you can enjoy the benefits of massage therapy in the comfort of your home, without having to rush to an appointment.

Promote Wellness to Your Spine

There is nothing that promotes wellness for your neck and spine more than a massage after a hard day at work.

Massage chairs use zero gravity technology, developed by NASA, that takes the weight of the world off your back. This advanced technology puts your entire body in a state of weightlessness, which decompresses your neck and spine and displaces muscle tension.

Once in the reclined position, your body is able to enter a deep state of relaxation while the chair rollers begin to massage you.

Relieve Lower Back Pain

Massage chairs help to relieve one of the major causes of discomfort in the body: lower back back.

In-chair heat warms the muscles in your lower back, increasing blood circulation. Blood carries nutrients to the cells and flushes out waste products, so when you increase circulation you reduce pain in the joints, ligaments, tendons, and muscles.

Lower back pain and muscle spasms are often a result of poor circulation of the blood and lymphatic fluids. Massage chairs greatly improve the health and wellness of your lower back by encouraging these fluids to move throughout the body.

Boost Your Immune System

You will immediately notice the health and wellness benefits of a massage chair beyond the relief of pain and tension.

Stress lowers the immune system and is a significant contributor to illness. Massage releases endorphins, which reduces stress hormones and boosts your immune system.Dreamwave

When you relieve stress, the body has time to rejuvenate and restore itself to a healthy state. Regular massage has been shown to noticeably reduce the number of colds and flus. It naturally follows that a massage chair offers the same benefits.

Save Money and Avoid Hassle

Many of us don’t nourish our bodies as often as we would like, despite the many health benefits. For one, the hassle of getting to a massage clinic even just once a week is significant and many of us don’t have the time.

The upfront investment of a massage chair is clearly more than a massage appointment. However, over time, a massage chair will actually save you a lot of money.

If you consider how much you would pay to see a massage therapist as often as your body would benefit from the treatment, a massage chair proves itself to be a much more affordable option. In just a couple of years, you would easily spend more than the cost of a massage chair to see a massage therapist as often as you would be able to use your chair.

Posture Perfect with the Posture Medic

Take a moment and envision a successful person in your mind. A strong, powerful athlete, standing proudly on their home turf. A business executive, who, being the best in their field, is consistently under the scrutiny of head-hunters from the biggest and the best. Just for a minute, close your eyes and envision that you are in a meeting with Steve Jobs, watching him present his newest and latest idea. Now, place all three of these people side by side. Take a moment to notice how they stand. There is one noticeable factor that connects all three of them together. They have great posture. You see, a great posture is one of the most powerful components to great body language, which portrays success, confidence, and power. The problem faced by millions of people, however,  is that great posture is not easily adopted into our day to day lives. We naturally slouch. Our shoulders roll forward, and upper back hunches, placing tremendous amounts of stress onto our upper trapezius muscles, rotator cuff and lower back. Now, because of the amazing ability for our body to adapt to the situations presented to it, our body adapts this poor posture, and the lower trapezius, rear deltoid, and rhomboid muscles become weak, the scapula unstable, and lacking the ability to hold the shoulders back for much more than a few minutes at a time. This becomes increasingly more difficult due to the fact that in order to hold our shoulders in the proper position, we have to consciously think about it, but as soon as our brain focuses on something else, the shoulders return to the slouched position.

This is where the posture medic comes in. The posture medic is more than just a quick fix. It is a tool designed to correct years of bad posture in just one month of use. It follows a simple, 15-30 minute, three step procedure that when done consistently provides lasting effects for your posture. The clever loop design of the band allows users to achieve a deep stretch in the overactive chest muscles that cause the shoulders to be pulled forward, making them the most detrimental factor to a bad posture. With the pull from these overtightened chest muscles alleviated, the band can now be used similar to an exercise band to help strengthen those weak trapezius, deltoid, and rhomboid muscles in the back. With the chest muscles stretched, and the back muscles strengthened, the shoulders will naturally be pulling back and downwards in the proper position. Now, the posture medic can work to it’s fullest potential. By utilizing the clever loop design once again, you can pull the unit over your elbows and onto your shoulders, allowing the elasticity of the band to pull the shoulders back, stabilizing the shoulder joint in that same proper positioning, and ultimately taking the conscious act of holding a good posture out of your mind entirely, while your muscles adapt to this new position.

You will be able to feel the scapula pulled together properly, opening your chest, your shoulders in a position of strength and relief, as if the weight of the entire world has been lifted off your back. Your lungs expand with ease, air flowing as softly and easily as a stream. Now, close your eyes again, and this time, add yourself to those 3 successful, confident people standing side by side. You fit in perfectly.

Using your Yantra Mat

Receive one of these spiky mats from a friend as a gift recently? Unsure what it’s for, or just looking for more information on the original acupressure mat after your purchase? We at Bodo Wellness Technology love this mat and what it has done for many of us, so we want to share some ideas, tips experiences with everyone.

Ideas for use:

You might have tried to lie directly on the mat the first time you used it, and maybe it’s been locked away in a closet ever since. Maybe you loved it right away! For those that found the initial experience unpleasant, we recommend you try again, but this time with a thin shirt or light sheet over the mat. This reduces the initial unpleasant sensations, and allows your body to adjust to the mat more slowly.

Laying on the mat on the floor allows for more pressure to be placed across the body, but some people prefer to use the mat on top of their mattress. This allows the mat to contour more to the curvature of your back, and some people may find it more useful for working their lower back.

Really want to get into the lower back? While laying on the mat, bend your knees, placing your feet as close to your back as possible. You will instantly feel more pressure on the lower back area. Alternate between having your knees bent like this and laying flat to really work into the lower back and get some pain relief.

Lower Back Pain

Tips:

Traveling with the Yantra Mat? Try taking just the outermost part of the mat with you. Undo the velcro at the top of the mat and remove the foam pad. The outer layer will pack smaller, and can be used on top of a mattress at your hotel or wherever you are staying.

To wash the mat, again take the foam pad out to avoid getting it wet. Then gently hand wash the outside layer with soap and water. Just be careful not to scrub to hard or you may poke you hand!

Stubborn neck pain or a nagging headache? Try rolling the Yantra mat up, with the spikes facing outward, then place the rolled mat under the neck or on the lower back part of the head. Some of us have found this method especially helpful for combatting neck pain as well as tension headaches, especially when they feel like they start in the neck area.

When to use the mat:

Talk to anyone at Bodo and you might get a different answer for when one of us likes to use the Yantra mat. Some find that it helps them to fall asleep at night, as the muscle relaxation it provides compliments winding down before bed. Others find that it gives them a bit of a rush and causes a surge of energy, perfect for when you are just waking up or hitting that mid-day slump!

So, now you know more about the Yantra Mat and how to use it. If you have any more questions be sure to come by one of our retail stores and ask, or give us a shout, and above all, just give the Yantra Mat a chance. We promise only the first couple seconds are as bad as the mat looks!

19-Year-Old Student Develops Ocean Cleanup Array

19-year-old Dutch engineering student Boyan Slat has proposed the use of floating booms to gather garbage from the ocean.

The device consists of an anchored network of floating booms and processing platforms that could be dispatched to garbage patches around the world. Instead of moving through the ocean, the array would span the radius of a garbage patch, acting as a giant funnel.

His team’s crowdfunding campaign has raised over $80,000 to fund a feasibility study.

Update: Stiv Wilson, policy director of ocean conservation nonprofit 5Gyres.org, has responded with an extensive critique of Slat’s plan and suggests readers support existing efforts to reduce the flow of plastics into the ocean.

Stiv suggests reading Flotsametrics to get the real scoop on flotsam (floating trash). The book chronicles the adventures of Curtis Ebbesmeyer as his interest in wayward trash inadvertently revolutionizes the study of the world’s oceans.
